Can I go to a tattoo shop and ask them...?

...if they can draw something our for me and then give me a price estimate? Basically i know what i want, i just dont know how to put it together. So i just thought that maybe i can go in and ask them if they can draw something out for me? And then have them give me a price estimate? And would they do this for free?

Basically i'm a little nervous to ask because my friend got a tattoo at the shop that i want to go to and the guy was kind of rude. She showed him what she wanted (off of the flash wall) and then he walked awy and disappeared before she could finish...then he came back and had the drawing finished and showed her and she said "but can i get this instead of the flower" (she pointed to something else on the flash wall) and he sighed, rolled his eyes and then disappeared again and came back with the drawing. I thought that him doing that was very unprofessional..but anyways, after that he did an amazing job on her tat.

But should i go to that place? Or go to another shop?

Honestly Chances are she just got a tattoo that he has done several times before, So he "jumped the gun" and Drew it out before hearing what else she wanted, That was his mistake first off, Tattoo artists should never assume things like that, However They're so used to doing things off of the wall that it gets boring for them, He would probably actually love to draw a custom tattoo for you because that would mean he gets to incorporate his own style into the drawing and have fun with it, In most tattoo shops they don't buy flash on a regular basis so most every artist has done everything at least once, And it almost becomes routine and like clockwork for them,For example just today while I was at the shop with my boyfriend he was requested to do a specific set of praying hands that he can now do in 30 minutes because he does them at least 3 times a week ( A set of praying hands with handcuffs around the wrists that has "only god can judge me" around them, Tattoo artists love a challenge, Something unique and crazy that they can have fun doing, Think of it as you yourself doing the same paint by number painting over and over again, Thats how most tattoo shops are, It was rude and unprofessional of him I agree with that, But Just kindly go up to him if he does custom work, If he says yes, Tell him you pretty much know what you want but need someone to draw it for you, He might ask for a small deposit upfront but thats just to ensure you will come back for the tattoo and not waste his time, The deposit will be knocked off the price of course then he should set up an appointment or draw it on the spot if time permits, If you like his work then go for it you would probably love his custom work even more =) Good luck

GO to another shop ...I'm assuming this is your first tat...so you want to enjoy it and get what you want and explain what you need they should't charge you they have a basic idea and they will let you know if it can be acheived. Also...go during a slow time like mid-afternoon so they have plenty of time to fix up what you like. Good Luck!!
Reply:you can go there if you want because you know they do good work, but i am sure you can find another reputable tattoo parlor that would give better customer service. and asking questions is totally fine because getting a tattoo is a big deal so making sure you get what you want is what is most important.
Reply:i recently (about 6 months ago) got a huge piece done on my ribs...it is of two lotus flowers and japanese art/water/wind and cherrie blossoms...basically, i brought him many pics and gave him a deposit...he gave me a rough estimate using the size, etc...when i came back he was able to give me a better estimate. but, be prepared to give a nice deposit! good luck!
Reply:well, if you liked the work, then sure you could go back. but if you didnt like his etiquette and he was being a jerk, believe me, there are more places where you could go and they could also as well do a good and maybe even better job!

hope it helps
Reply:if you know they do good work, go there. Some people are better with comming up with designs than others. Before you even tell them what you want. Tell them you want to discuss first and to not disappear.
Reply:well ur gonna have da tat 4 life so it wuld b a good idea 2 go there if you know he does a good job...so wat if he has an attitude, hes not ur problem as long as he gets da job done right ! ! ! !
Reply:**** him i'd go somewhere else
Reply:I understand you like the guy's work. That's all well and good, but let me put it this way: You know the guy is a rude jerk. The way he treated your friend is extremely unprofessional. Do you REALLY want an unprofessional, rude jerk using an instrument on you that will poke thousands of tiny holes into your skin? Really? Or would you rather have a polite, professional person who is willing to listen to what you want and who won't get angry if they don't get it right the first time working on you?

I can't believe people are actually suggesting that a tattooist treating a customer rudely is acceptable, so long as they do great work! It's COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE. I don't care if they are having a bad day - I'm an artist myself, an advertising designer, and trust me, I cannot treat my customers like crap just because I'm having a bad day! I certainly can't sigh and roll my eyes at someone just because they send back artwork to me saying that something needs to be changed! Hon, this artist is not the only tattoo artist who can do great work. There are PLENTY of amazing tattoo artists out there who know how to treat a customer - go and find one.

Does there really even need to be debate on this? It's a no-brainer!
Reply:If the tattoo artist does good work I really wouldn't worry about his attitude. His attitude doesn't mean anything. It is a tattoo shop not a friendship shop. You only have to put up with the artist for the length of your tattoo. My husband has been a professional tattoo artist for 21 years this year and just like the rest of us he has good days and a few bad days. And even if the guy is not very pleasant, the most important thing is the work that he does. His work shouldn't be judged by his attitude, but by his work itself. Most tattoo artist enjoy doing custom work. Even if he does have an attitude I am willing to bet he would work with you and get it drawn up for you. Don't let his attitude get in your way of getting a good tattoo. If you know he does good work go to him. Tell him up front that what you want is custom and see if he is willing to draw it for you. If he isn't, ask some of your other friends who have tattoos where they got theirs and go check out those shops. Talk with those artist, look at their portfolios. Make sure you like the work that they do and go for it. I hope this helps. Good Luck !
Reply:Sounds like an idiot. Not you, him!

The talented ones are the ones that will draw what you want then apply it. If you don't like it you can work with them on it. You see the good ones are true artist that do it because they take pride in what they create. By creating something that pleases you is the whole reason for their existence. Unless you are totally in love with something on the wall don't take those dime a dozen drawings I have had some work done on three different occasions. And they loved it so much they took pictures of it for their web page and personal portfolio.

Find someone you are comfortable with.
